Happy Earth Day 2019! Jr Ocean Guardians proudly and officially turns three years old today! Over this past year so much has happened in the world. We were graced with the presence of youth activism in leaders such as Greta Thunberg and Lilly Platt. We were shocked as government officials threw environmental concern to the wind. Now is the time that we must all uses our voices for our planet.
Jr Ocean Guardians had a year full of secret projects and constant smiles. I had the honor of attending the first-ever Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco and was named a National Gold Award Girl Scout. I’ve been given platforms to speak out on ocean issues and challenge mindsets on the daily. As I reflect on this past year, I’ve learned more about myself and the planet than ever. I’ve learned that utter kindness is instilled within people from all walks of life at a young age and that the hope for a better future is not lost. A favorite quote of mine is “A sunflower still grows at night." As time rolls on and news pages change, I understand the feeling of absolute terror when thinking of the future of our planet. Please listen when I say to stay optimistic. The power of optimism is easily overlooked. When optimism is combined with action, the possibilities are endless.
So on this Earth Day, I encourage you to think about the future. Take a deep breath and process it all. Then when you feel ready - take all the energy and channel it into good. #DoGood. And, click here to sign North Face's Change.org petition to make Earth Day a national holiday.
Keep Making Waves,
Shelby
